About Poople
The free daily word ladder puzzle that challenges your vocabulary one letter at a time.
What Is Poople?
Poople is a free online word ladder game where you transform one four-letter word into another by changing exactly one letter at a time. Each intermediate step must be a real English word. The target is always POOP — and reaching it in the fewest possible steps is the goal.
A Daily Challenge for Everyone
Every day, a new starting word is revealed at 08:00 UTC. All players worldwide receive the same puzzle, making it a shared daily challenge — much like Wordle, but with a different kind of word puzzle mechanics. Play today's Poople puzzle to see how few steps you need.
The Word Ladder Tradition
The word ladder puzzle was invented by Lewis Carroll in 1877. Carroll, best known as the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, originally called his invention "Doublets" and published it in the magazine Vanity Fair. The rules were simple: transform one word into another by changing one letter at a time, with each intermediate step forming a valid word.
From Doublets to Digital
Over a century later, word ladders remain one of the most elegant word puzzles ever devised. Poople brings this classic into the digital age with a daily challenge format, competitive leaderboards, and a community of word puzzle enthusiasts. Learn more in our What Is a Word Ladder? article.
How Poople Works
Each day at 08:00 UTC, a new four-letter starting word is selected. Your task is to find a path from that word to POOP by changing one letter per step. The puzzle provides a par score — the minimum number of steps needed — to give you a target to aim for.
Game Modes
Poople offers two modes:
- Daily Puzzle — The same challenge for everyone worldwide. Compete on the leaderboard for fewest steps and fastest time.
- Unlimited Mode — Practice with random starting words. Great for building your word ladder intuition without affecting your daily score.
